public school
Thursday, January 31st, 2008
For those in LA, check out The Public School, an initiative of TELIC Arts Exchange, in which the public drives the curriculum. Anyone can propose, sign up for, and/or offer to teach classes. Although not explicitly mentioned on the site, the educational focus is meant to be within the general context of art.
It’s pretty cool to see what people have proposed so far. Technology is well represented with classes in ARM and PIC programming, computational graphics, and Java/JavaScript. On my interest list: grant writing, vacuum forming, digital textile printing, and Chinese pop music (among others).
Nik and I are both on the initial course-selection committe. It will be really interesting to see how the selection and implementation processes develop (in other words, how do we define that amorphous cloud shape in the diagram above?), and also how self-sustaining the program can be. “What do you want to learn?” is such a great question, but “What do you want to teach?” is even better, I think.
